Today's puzzle
Halloween word scramble
Something has muddled the letters of the Halloween words. Sort them out one line at a time. The short round is quick enough for a party game; the long round hides words such as graveyard and tombstone.

Rules
- On each line the letters of a Halloween word are out of order.
- Find the word that uses exactly those letters and enter it.
- Right answers turn green on screen. Check shows which lines still need work.
- All answers are taken from the Halloween list used across this site.
Running the scramble as a Halloween party game
Of the three scrambles on the site this is the one children ask for, because the answers are fun to say. For a party, print the short round and cut the sheet into strips, one jumble per strip. Hide the strips around the room, let teams collect them, and only then start unscrambling. The team with the most solved strips wins the first pick from the candy bowl. The numbered solution page stays in the host's pocket.
The short round is full of Halloween's best small words: ghost, witch, broom, spell, mummy, skull, bones, bats, raven, mask, moon, goblin, spooky, creepy and eerie. The long round is for older players and has halloween, pumpkin, lantern, cauldron, vampire, skeleton, costume, haunted, graveyard, tombstone, monster and werewolf in its pool.
Some of these words give themselves away. Only zombie and wizard have a Z, and only wizard has a W to go with it. A jumble with W and two Es and an F and an L is werewolf. Three Es out of five letters can only be eerie. When there is no such giveaway, look for a pair: the OO of broom, moon and spooky, the MM of mummy, the LL of skull and spell. Put the pair in the middle and try the remaining letters on either side.
Tips for players and hosts
- Say the letters in a spooky voice. It sounds silly, and hearing them in a new order often brings the word.
- Halloween words are heavy on K, W and Z; use those letters as anchors.
- On screen, Reveal one fills in the next letter of the current line.
- Two teams can play the same round by opening the same puzzle number on two phones.
- A fresh round is posted each day, and Next opens another without waiting.
How these puzzles are made and checked
Each scrambled word is compared letter by letter with its answer, must differ from it, and the answer must be the only word in our own list that uses exactly those letters.
| Level | Puzzles | What the bank contains |
|---|---|---|
| Short words | 366 | 8 words of 4 to 6 letters, 1 themes |
| Long words | 366 | 8 words of 7 to 9 letters, 1 themes |
The puzzle of the day is chosen by the date on your device: puzzle 1 was the puzzle for 1 January 2026, and the number goes up by one each day. Short words: 366 puzzles, so the same puzzle comes round again after 366 days. Long words: 366 puzzles, so the same puzzle comes round again after 366 days. Every number stays open in the archive control above the grid. More detail is on the page how the puzzles are made and checked.
Questions
Are the answers included?
Yes. Choose Print with solution and the answers come out on a second sheet. The on-screen version marks each correct word as you type it.
How long does a round take?
It depends on the players, and we have not timed anyone. The short round has short, familiar words and is meant to be quick; the long round takes more thought.
Could a jumble spell two different words?
Not two words from our Halloween list, which is checked for this when the site is built. If the letters also make an everyday word that has nothing to do with Halloween, the spooky one is the answer.
How many Halloween rounds are there?
732 rounds over 2 levels, each one numbered and linkable.
